Useful places to look when planning a RTW trip

I will try to edit this as I find new sites.

Forums and Blogs:

http://www.ultimate-trip.com/
Has some nice videos (esp. Nepal) of places that he has traveled.

http://www.travelpod.com/
The best of everything. Blogs, forums and general info.

http://www.thirteenmonths.com/index.htm
An interesting blog detailing a couple's travels around the world. It's a nice balance to the standard backpacker blog in that they did not try to do it on the super cheap.

http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/
Lonley Planet's forums. Great practical information and a good place to ask questions. Warning: Like most forums it has developed its own culture. If you are a "newbie" expect the usual forum-types screeching at you to "search the forum, idiot" "try google," etc. Don't be deterred. Keep reading and posting.

How to sites:
Packing and Gear ideas:
http://www.onebag.com/list.html
Wonderful down-to earth advice on traveling. I have used his packing list as my guide in my planning.

Tour Sites:
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/
I can't vouch for the tours themselves, this site is great for getting a sense of China's scale and what is possible to see in X number of days.

http://www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm
Much like above, only for taking the trans-Mongolian or Trans-Siberian rail.

General Info Sites:
http://travelindependent.info/
Great for getting a sketch of countries. I've used it as a jumping off point for researching possible destinations. The site is also a solid clearinghouse of information from immunizations to what-to-pack lists. Check out the photography as well.

Lodging:
http://www.usservas.org/traveler.html
An interesting alternative to the hostel/tourist method. The organization works as a host-family setup with the overarching goal of cultural exchange and encouraging peace.

Healthcare:
http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/
Scotland's NHS site for travelers. Sure I'm not Scottish, but the site is really handy for malaria maps, advice, etc.

Decisions

At this stage, K and I are still deciding where to go. It seemed easy at first when all we had Dave and Leanne's trip as a model www.gothereandback.com. But once we started to actually talk about where we might want to go, the list just kept growing. Do we go to Kilimanjaro or to Phuket? Corn Island or Ulaan Baatar?

I'd love to be able to say we'll go to all of those places, but realistically we probably will have about 4 months to do the circuit. So here are a few possible itineraries:

(Amercian Part- Pretty Firm and all by car)
DC-Austin-Phoenix-Grand Canyon-Zion-Bryce-Yosemite-SF-Redwoods-Pilot Rock- Seattle-LA (2-3weeks)

Auckland-Wellington-South Island (11 Days)

Tokyo-Hong Kong- Beijing-Ulaan Bataar-Kathmandu-Tibet (4-5weeks)

Johannesburg-Kilamanjaro-Victoria Falls-Some Safari Park (2 weeks)

Rio-San Paol0-Iguassu Falls-Buenos Aires -Santiago-Machu Pichu-Amazon-Fortaleza (4-5 weeks)

Seattle-Pilot Rock-Yellowstone-Badlands-Minneapolis-Chicago-NYC new home (10Days)

Seems like a good trip. Problems? No Central America, no Europe.

Okay, how about:

(Amercian Part- Pretty Firm and all by car)
DC-Austin-Phoenix-Grand Canyon-Zion-Bryce-Yosemite-SF-Redwoods-Pilot Rock- Seattle-LA (2-3weeks)

Tokyo-Hong Kong- Beijing-Ulaan Bataar-Kathmandu-Tibet (4-5weeks)

Greece-Budapest-Prague-Florence-Somewhere on the Mediterranean-Barcelona-Cordoba-Lisbon-Paris-London (6 weeks)

Rio-San Paol0-Iguassu Falls-Buenos Aires -Santiago-Machu Pichu-Amazon-Fortaleza (4-5 weeks)

Seattle-Pilot Rock-Yellowstone-Badlands-Minneapolis-Chicago-NYC new home (10Days)

Ok, but no New Zealand or Central America. So now you start to see the problem...

Well...Here we go

Out and About in a Boat is the beginning of a journal about running away from home. Pulling up stakes, quitting the workaday world and just traveling.
